The Edessa waterfalls, including the Great Waterfall, Karan
Waterfall, and Twin Waterfalls, Diplos or Dihalotos, are recognized as a
genuine treasure of Greece.
The largest waterfall in Eastern Europe, Karan
Waterfall, throws water from 70 meters height. Edessa
waterfalls are the main
attraction of the Edessa city and were formed in the fourteenth century
following a strong earthquake. The town is one of the most beautiful in Greece
full of little streams, bridges and parks. “Edessa” is a name from the ancient
Phrygians living in the region before Macedonians in the ninth century BC and
means "water town". Later, it became the capital of Macedonia. In Roman
times, Via Egnatia (the first highway to cross the Balkan Peninsula, the road
between Rome and Byzantium) passed through Edessa. Rock erosion over the
centuries led to the formation of the amazing waterfalls in the park. Behind
the Karan Waterfall there is a small cave that can be explored by curious
people. Tourists can enjoy a beautiful sight-seeing through flowers and
attractions including the Museum of Water and historical artifacts. Edessa is
located at just 1 ½ hrs by bus from Thessaloniki.
