Liriodendron tulipifera, commonly known as the tulip tree,
American tulip tree, tulip tree, tulip poplar or yellow poplar, is the most
beautiful of trees of the temperate zones.
It is native to North America from
Nova Scotia, Canada, to Florida. Liriodendron reach a height of 50-60 meters with
a maximum diameter of 2 meters. It’s flowers
are large yellow, orange and green tulip-like. The tulip tree can live
500 years. He was introduced to Europe in 1663 and since then, can be seen in
parks of the old continent, where it reaches heights of 40 meters and lives
about 300 years. A famous Tulip tree was planted at the Little Trianon of
Versailles in 1771 for Queen Marie
Antoinette and was destroyed by a storm
in December 1999. Curiously, I met a a Frenchman who said he first saw such a
wonder-tree at the Botanical Garden of Bucharest. Tulip tree can resist at -30
° C temperatures, but in the first years of life it must be protected.
Liriodendronul tulipifera often don't bloom until 16 years old and then blooms from 4 to 4 years.
