In Spain, the celebration of Magi, the (Three) Wise Men,
(Three) Kings, or Kings from the East, is more popular than Christmas
concerning the gifts for children.
On 5 January every year, the evening before
Twelfth Night begins the Magi parade (Cabalgata de los
Reyes Magos.) Children
should go to bed earlier in order to receive the gifts requested in letters to
the three wise men. In Spain and other Hispanic countries the Magi (the three
Kings) are more known and loved by children than Santa Claus. Celebrated on
January 6, Epiphany (from greek epiphaneia, means ”manifestation”, ”striking
appearance”), is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God
the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ. Western Christians commemorate
principally (but not solely) the visitation of the Biblical Magi to the Baby
Jesus, and thus Jesus' physical manifestation to the Gentiles. Eastern
Christians commemorate thebaptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation
to the world as the Son of God..On January 6, the spaniards eat a traditional
cake, decorated symbolically called "roscon". It is not known exactly
who were the three wise men whom The Gospel According to St. Matthew mentions,
but we know with certainty that they were wise pagans who followed a star that
led them to Bethlehem. In the third century, the three wise men became kings in
European traditions, in the sixth century already had names: Bithisarea, and
Gathaspa Melichior and XIV century. The Armenian tradition identifies them:
Baltazar, king of Arabia, Melchior, King of Persia, and Gaspar, King of India.
Their story, including their lives before traveling to Israel and after worship
the Child Jesus, the history of their relics found in the Cathedral Cologne in
Cologne, Germany, was written by the monk Johannes of Hildesheim, in the German
city Hildesheim, in his masterpiece "Historia Trium Regum" from 1364.
